At 20:34:55 on 15/02/2009, turbo delighted uk.legal by announcing:
What usually happens is you put your card in the reader .Shop keys
in the amount from their side of the counter ..You enter your PIN
number and it gets authorised . How can the PIN number get added
alongside the amount being paid for ... Theres something not right
about this tale .
My vet last week when I paid by chip and pin , entered the amount
from their data terminal, with my card in the on-counter unit...all
perfectly normal so far. The she said , 'Check the amount is correct
, press ENTER , then your PIN , and ENTER again'.... First time I
have come across this system, and not normal method compared to the
petrol station, Tescos, etc.... Sounds very similar to the report in
this story.
Unlikely. The system for cardholder confirmation of amount is usually:
1. Operator keys the amount
2. Operator presses enter to complete entry
3. Terminal asks cardholder to confirm amount by pressing enter.
4. Optional gratuity step
5. Terminal asks for PIN (followed by enter)
6. Terminal asks operator to complete transaction
Sounds like step #2 had been missed here. Entering PIN at step 3 will
not add the PIN to the amount unless the software has been *extremely*
badly written - and here the bank would have to take some blame as they
will have certified the software.
She will have had to enter her PIN twice though - once when mistakenly
completing the amount entry, and once for the real PIN entry.
