The above have been operating a brutal parking system in which people
were sent bills through the post if they overstayed their welcome.
Number plate recognition enforced this. However I now notice that
although there are signs saying you must not overstay, but now there
is NO sign saying what the penalty would be if you did!. It is now
the same in Sainsbury, again with no sign saying what penalty is
enforced. Can they issue any penalty under these conditions?

All my local ALDI stores have signs clearly on display, you can't go in to
the car park, drive about, enter the store, leave the store or the car park
without seeing a sign. It is printed up in English as we are in the UK, so
if people can't read and understand they should learn English.
There is also a sign in my local J Sainsbury car park, well 6 of them to be
precise.
They don't want you using the car park if you are not using their store,
it's as sinple as that. No one takes 3hours+ to do their shopping, not
even people claiming they have some form of disability.
I remember the story of that fat, revolting, greedy woman who stayed
in KFC too long while she finished off a few buckets of chicken, but she
knew the terms and conditions and agreed to them by parking there.
There is no requirement to display a numberplate on private property
so cover it up, change it or take them off before reaching a point you
can be identified. Only certain parts of the Road Traffic Act apply to
private property and numberplates isn't one, neither are traffic accidents
as the police will IGNORE such reports unless it's one of their colleagues
or relatives.

Thank you. I asked about the covering up of number plates recently
and no-one had an answer, that's brilliant.
I was aware of the menacing signs they used to have in Aldi, but I
think what has happened is that in this branch the public have avoided
the car park and so Aldi's opportunity chance of getting passing
business has diminished. Consequently, although they still say there
is a 3 hour limit, they have removed all the signs with threats or
consequences for staying longer.

The answer you got is wrong. While the land is private, it is open to the public and their vehicles and is treated in law in the same way as the carraigeway. On YOUR land, with YOUR car, the other poster is right and you can leave numberplates or any other bit off your car. If members of the public are able to bring their cars onto it, you'll find its exactly the same as the road.

Besides, its irrelevant anyway. Stand in front of their camera and wave your numberplate at them - its *still* just an invoice that they'd have to go to extraordinary lengths to claim on unless you're dumb enough to pay it.
