You forgot to mention that this only occurs in a vacuum.
Well, no. Low pressure will do but you may then get ionization of the
gases in the tube which will contribute to the ion flow - see Crookes tube.
If it is a hot cathode tube containing gas which ionises then it would
then be a Thyratron and not a Crookes Tube or Cathode Ray Tube.
