Jump crowd 'disgust' police boss
Bystanders who urged a teenager to jump to his death from a car park have
been branded "ghoulish" by Derbyshire's Chief Constable Mick Creedon.
Shaun Dykes, 17, from Kilburn, fell to his death from the top of the
Westfield Centre multi-storey in Derby on 27 September, as onlookers
shouted "jump".
Mr Creedon said: "It disgusts me to think of their motivation and their
lack of compassion."

People like that are attention seekers. I for one would not be the
slightest
bit bothered if a person wanted to jump from a building. They can do what
they like so long as it doesn't cause inconvenience to others.

The chief constable also defended his officers for not making any arrests.

They couldn't make any arrests as no offences were committed.

Police had spent three hours trying to coax the teenager down.

Why bother, he must have been mentally deficient or drunk/drugged.
no normal person would do that for attention.

Some onlookers even used phones to film the event.

Why not? It's almost a free country.

Mr Creedon said: "While we are very used to dealing with incidents like
this, this was unusual with members of the public videoing, taking
photographs and even shouting for Shaun to jump.

It shows people are not bothered and have no time for attention
seekers like this.

It's a lack of time for idiots attention seeking. The police have no time
for them either. Ask him how many calls they ever investigate from
mentally ill people saying they will kill themselves. Maybe his own
officers
don't care either?


"All my experience and belief in the good in people tells me that the vast
majority of the crowd who watched the events unfold were wishing for the
best result, hoping that Shaun remained safe and well.

They were hoping he would be locked up due to the inconvenience and
expense.

"However, all of us associated with the force see the actions of that
small minority who were encouraging Shaun to take his own life as totally
abhorrent.

He was going to do it anyway, if he was mentally ill enough to not
understand what he was doing, or could be so easily influenced, maybe he
should have been sectioned much earlier. The police should be having
a go at the problems now faced by care in the community. I would
prefer secure hospitals to be reintroduced and people like that put in them.
The rest of the public are at so much risk from some mentally ill people.

He should think about that when his officers ignore 999 calls or ignore
calls they don't think are genuine. Maybe the ones ignored because of
a previous address history.

Mr Creedon explained that there had not been enough police officers
available to arrest those onlookers urging the teenager to jump.

They had not committed any offence so there would be no arrests.
Why doesn't he just say so.

"I know people are asking why these irresponsible idiots weren't arrested
at the time, but I ask the public to understand that the few available
officers at the scene were doing their best to manage a difficult
situation," he said.

What about the irresponsible idiot on the roof? He was also putting people
at risk.

"They should not have to deal with the extra distraction of the deviant
and ghoulish behaviour of a few, and if arrests had been made this would
have necessitated perhaps two officers leaving the scene for every person
arrested."

What he means is - no offence was committed by anyone apart from the
irresponsible idiot on the roof threatening to jump.

Mr Creedon added that officers involved in trying to talk to Shaun had
been affected by his death.

No doubt a claim for compensation to follow, appointments with counsellors
and whatever else they can get away with? Why do people do the job if they
can't cope and are not emotionaly strong enough to deal with the most
basic of incidents. What did people do before counsellors? They got on
with
things and moved on.

He said: "The fact they were unsuccessful in negotiating Shaun to safety
will have been very painful for them, particularly for the two officers
who spent two hours talking directly to him," he said.

So they have not done their job, I think that's what he means. They have
given a clear example of poor performance.
If they can't do the job, maybe it is time to think about employing
people that can.

Shaun was a student at Heanor Gate Science College.
An inquest into the his death has been opened and adjourned.


The best thing to do in a situation like that is to follow correct police
guidelines. Contain the scene and move any potential audiences
away. The person will see they are getting no attention and either
give up or end it fairly quickly so the public are not inconvenienced too
much. That will minimise the costs of road closures, extra officers etc.
You need to understand if a person wants to kill themselves there
are a number of ways. Some will want an audience, others will not.
