The council have now apologised for the heavy handed letter, but
doesn't this reveal a punitibve and almost hateful attitude towards
the public by those in 'power' today. It seems more and more like a
'them and us' society. A society where if the public fail to perform
to the 'letter of the law' in respect of any particular regulation,
they are immediatelty condemned, villified, fined, imprisoned and
whatever else.
We seem to be generating a govermental system, both local and
national, that thrives on demonising citizens. We need to put up our
hands and say S T O P. This madness has gone way too far already.
All the members of the council responsible for this should be sent on
a social awareness course, commencing with a poke in the eye.
This is exactly right what you say about "them and us". It's a sign of
the petty vindictiveness by jumped up officials who continually want
to get one over on the public they're supposed to serve. But this
attitude is very typical of us British. I am astonished to find that
actually the attitude wasn't very different during WWII, with people
quite willing to do the dirty on each other to gain a small advantage.
It happened all the time, everywhere, all over Britain. After an air
raid, spivs, but ordinary housewives, too, would be all over a bomb
site to see what they could scavenge. Read one of the books based on
Mass Observation or diaries from the war and you'd be surprised - and
shocked. So much for Major's old maids cycling to church! A lot of
that was just rose-tinted spectacles.
