For kristsake. It is Joe Public who asked not Einstein! The RMS value is
an average value of the sine wave.
The root of the mean square equals the average?
Maybe we should take a vote on that :-)
It certainly does, in real terms..
The average value of all symmetrical waveforms such as sinusoidal, square,
triangular etc is zero. Is that equal to their RMS values in "real" terms?
No, of course it isn't.
It is technically the average, but realistically, the average is the
mean of the absolute value - which is determined by RMS.
As defined in Chambers Dictionary of Science and Technology -
-------------------------
r.m.s power (Elec) The effective mean power level of an alternating
electrical supply. Abbrev. for root-mean-square power.
------------------------
The next entry is for r.m.s. value, which I will not quote in full but
which finishes by saying "Employed because the energy associated with
any wave depends on its intensity, i.e. upon the square of the
amplitude."
That is the whole point of it..
A valuable point when it suggests that we should be paying zero for the
near-sinusoidal value of VAhours that our electricity meters are recording.
You are (as in most of your posts in this thread) being very
ridiculous here.
You came into the thread apparently with the sole aim of showing off
your superior technical knowledge, and in doing so made some ludicrous
statements - such as suggesting that engineers would not use the term.
