For the 1,000,000th time that file is *not* your browsing history.

It most certainly is. It contains URLs that I have visited in the
past. Therefore it is de facto my browsing history however you and
Microsoft may choose to describe it..

And for a self-proclaimed expert on the subject you are sidestepping
all the questions I have asked. I say again, how does the index.dat
file speed up web-browsing? The fact is that it *slows down* the web
browser because it is searched through every time you enter a URL.

Indexs are not just sequential lists, they are ordered in a special way such
that data can be found quickly.

You are teaching your grandma to suck eggs whilst *still* not
answering the question I asked.

If your browser needs to know which stil is applied to a link (visited or
not) then the index file can be consulted to see if you have visited the
page.

I have no idea what a "stil" is. Please elaborate, and also tell me
why my browser needs to have that information when it is perfectly
able to access a site that I have never visited before with no
apparent delay.

My web browser can take up to a minute to display my default home page
- which is set to "blank"!

There is something wrong with your browser then. Probably riddled with
spyware....not been accessing dodgy sites have you? ;)

I most definitely have no malware or adware on my system. The issue
arose after Microsoft installed an update to its latest version of IE.

But why duplicate information?

One is in one format for displaying and the other is in a format for quickly
searching..

You pretend to know about database files and yet appear not to know
that it is most unusual to duplicate database data. You simply have
multiple indexes to the same data for exactly the purpose you state.
No need to duplicate the actual data at all.

It is a distinct disadvantage and I disable it. Far from speeding
things up, it slows down the operation tremendously.

It will have a slight impact on performance when it is building its indexes
but you can't deny that it speeds up searching of files incredibly.
Granted, searching my files isn't something I do a lot so I also disable it.

Yes, the "slight impact" on my system is to cause a *30 minute* delay
after boot during which the system is so slow as to be unusable, and
the HDD is being hammered like heck. Granted I have a tad more files
spread over 3TB of HDDs than the average user, but even so.

I am not disagreeing that it is constantly locked, only that it is in
constant use. Or do you not know the difference?

The explorer process is heavily used and having that process constantly open
and close the file would be detramental to performance.

The file is accessed only when the system needs to access web sites,
which is mainly during certain user actions. It would have negligible
impact if the file were closed when applications requiring to access
web sites were not in use.

Besides which you still have not explained *why* the system needs to
look at previous accesses to web sites in order to facillitate
accessing the web.
