Knife crime claims 60 victims each day

Contrary to the many expressions in this newsgroup that knife crime
isn't a problem, the Sunday Telegraph reports that knife crime is even
worse than the Independent reported last week. The ST's figure is a
total of 20,000 serious knife crimes last year, or 60 every day.

The paper has established that the rate of offending is increasing,
which is in line with what the police at the sharp end of crime have
been saying this week. Last week in a single 24-hour period six people
died in knife attacks. Goodness only knows how many additional victims
there were who "only" suffered a wounding or being threatened with a
knife.

I don't think Jacqui Smith's proposal to guide perpetrators of knife
crime past victims of knife attacks in hospital is a runner, for all
sorts of reasons, the main one being that this government cannot
organise a piss-up in a brewery, let along coordinate meetings between
perps and victims, except purely as a propaganda exercise to placate
the tabloids. What if there were no convenient victims with suitably
horrendous wounds on a particular day? Would the perps be shown
pictures instead?
