I am thinking of fitting HID headlamps to my car. I am wondering
whether this will affect the legality of the vehicle vis-a-vis the
annual MOT test.

Alasdair.
The ones you can buy in shops or order from ebay for £100 are not legal for
use if fitted to a car that never had them when it left the factory. The
beam pattern is distorted, the light spreads where it shouldn't and the car
will fail the MOT unless the inspector is bent. It is only legal to fit HID
headlamps if you fit a self levelling device and high pressure washers.
Your local MOT station will tell you all you need to know. If you get
pulled using retro-fitted HID lamps that are not even conforming to any
standard you will be prosecuted. It's not hard for the police to spot as
you blind people!
I fitted them to an older car of mine and they were brighter, but even when
aligned as best as they could be, the beam pattern scattered all over the
place. This didn't happen with a normal bulb in the same housing. They
were nowhere near as good as the ones fitted as standard to my other car.
Don't believe the claims on ebay about being legal for use or CE marked -
they are not.
