I bought a refurbished laptop from a seller on eBay with the
understanding that it was an item received by the supplier from the
manufacturer and not from another company or an end user. This fact is
stated on the suppliers website. The supplier states that the laptops
are customer returns or non-shipped items.
The laptop was faulty and has been returned. On checking the service
tag on the manufacturers website, it appears that the laptop is over 3
years old.
Would I be reasonable in thinking this is misleading?

ATB,

Probably not. What tends to happen is that the manufacturer introduces a
new [faster] model. Sales of the predecessor model trail off, and
inevitably there are a number of returns, with either user error or minor
repairable faults, trim damage etc.
After a year or so, the maker flogs a job lot to Morgan, Maplin, Highpoint
etc. and these are then sold off cheap, hopefully not leading to substitute
sales for the new model. If the maker had not stock rotated or had accepted
sale or return units from a distributor who didn't then you could easily get
a PC that was made three years ago (look at the date codes on chips etc.).
I have bought 'refurbs' that have never been out of the box, and equally
seen unused IBM laptops being stripped to recover the screens for newer
models.
