When can I back out from an accepted quote?

Back in the first week of April this year I was quoted for the installation
of a replacement boiler. At the time of the plumber's visit he indicated it
was likely that the work would be performed in April. I accepted this quote
in writing and via email. There is no mention of any timings on the letter
I signed. And no monies have yet been requested or paid.
We're now in mid-June, and I've had no acknowledgement from the trader, nor
any indication of when I'm likely to get the work done. I've tried contacts
via phone (home and mobile), but have had to leave a message each time,
which is not returned. I've had no response from emails. I've not yet tried
calling round!
In my last few messages I've indicated that I'm thinking of backing out of
this contract if the work cannot be done soon. I was hoping this might
provoke a response, but this doesn't seem to be the case.
I can believe that I was naive in not stating a time on the contract, or
some phrase to indicate time was of the essence. I also appreciate that a
good plumber is always busy. However, I do want the work done soon - our
existing boiler is considered dangerous.
Legally, am I bound indefinitely be my acceptance indefinitely? If not, how
do I proceed in backing out of this acceptance - could I do this in writing
stipulating I need a response or the work done by a particular time?
Many thanks in advance for any response (and apologies for a long post).
