"He said the case could be heard in France because the newspaper is sold
here and a video the paper put online of the orgy in March could be seen
here."

If this is true, then surely anyone with a website can be sued (or
prosecuted) in almost any country, irrespective of the country the
website is hosted in.

So, are we supposed to ensure our websites don't break any laws in any
country in the world now?

It's a very difficult question. Some governments certainly have
prosecuted, or at least issued warrants against, people who put up
websites in other countries. France is one of them, Germany another.
So-called "holocaust denial" material is one of the key issues.

... and of course the Americans regard their laws as applicable throughout
the planet.

Certainly it seems that if I were to communicate with someone in the US
via the Internet, even if I had no idea where they were located, and our
communications were held to break some US law, I could be liable to
fast-track extradition.

That is one reason to purchase and use Evidence Eliminator, or
a similiar program for your computer. This way, if your computer
is seized and examined, the authorites will not be able to recover
any evidence from your computer. They cannot prosecute what
they cannot recover.

Which would turn out to be a complete waste of time and money if:

a) they obtain copies of your communications from the other party's
computer

b) they've been intercepting your communications
.
