THEY were blatant lies that ripped apart the lives of a Hampshire
family.
It was in 2006 when an 11- year-old girl claimed she had been
indecently assaulted by her own teenage brother and his friend as they
played in the park.
A court believed her sorry tale and her elder brother, then aged just
15, was taken from the family home by social services and placed in a
children's home.
Together with his friend, then aged 14, they were both given
nine-month supervision orders and placed on the sex offenders'
register after being found guilty of indecent assault.
Now, three years on, the schoolgirl has been locked up for eighteen
months after admitting the whole episode, which she claimed happened
when she was just nine, had been a pack of lies.
However, she will only serve nine months.
The boys, now 17 (brother) and 16 (friend), have finally found justice
after years of being despised for their "crime".
Southampton Crown Court heard how the girl had kept up the pretence to
her family, police and to a court to get the pair convicted.
The boys had initially been questioned by police, and on April 18,
2006, were convicted after she gave evidence via video link in the
city's youth court.
Weeks later the girl's mum even contacted the Daily Echo, angry that
her daughter had to face one of her attackers at her school every day.
The girl herself described him as "evil and like the devil" and said
she had not initially told anyone about her "assault" because her
brother and his friend said they would hurt her.
She told the Daily Echo at the time: "It makes me feel angry. He
passes me nearly every day at school. I think he shouldn't be allowed
in any school. I think he's one of those really evil people. He's like
the devil."
Prosecutor Richard Withey said the girl's brother had always
maintained his innocence and concerns over the conviction were raised
last summer when their mother became concerned that her daughter had
been lying about other matters.
I think it's disgraceful that anyone should go to prison (or equivalent of
prison) for an offence committed at the age of 11. It's totally barbaric.
Huh!
