There will still be sales, but reduced in quantity - just as sales
were reduced below the level there otherwise would have been when tape
recorders came out. People buying gifts, people wanting the music at
full CD quality without messing about downloading and burning.
I have been able to download music for many years, but own more music
on commercial CDs than on DIY CD or MP3 player format.
Why? Just for the quality?
If you're over 25 and can't hear mosquito devices, the overwhelming probability is that you wouldn't be able to tell the difference blind.
Anyway, by far the greatest part of the music downloaded by P2P goes straight to an mp3 player, so any comparison with largely outmoded CDs is probably irrelevant.
"How can the music industry make people pay for their products, and how can
it survive if it can't?"
Read my other posts. It might be nearing the end of multi-millionaire
rock groups, who as a consequence will still produce lots of new music
into middle-age and beyond rather than semi-retiring in their 20's or
early 30's. Which may well give us a bit more "mature" music to
listen to.
It might. Then again, it might just lead to a dumbing down of all music. After all, what incentive is there to excel if the big money isn't there?
