Crown Property?

Choose the wrong bit of it, eg some bits of the Faslane Submarine
Base, and they can shoot you dead simply for stepping foot on it.

Not without issuing two verbal warnings first.
"Navy, Stop. Stand still".
Then if they fail to comply
"Navy, Stop or I shoot".
Even then, there are about a hundred additional terms and conditions
which could prevent the guard from legally being allowed to open fire.
It's all part of the MoD's Rules Of Engagement.
Every member of the armed forces charged with the control of a weapon and
live ammunition must carry a small credit card sized document called "The
White Card" which outlines the rules of engagement.
I'm sure there's probably a copy of it scanned and available to view on
the internet somewhere. It's not like it's a classified document.
Lying so-and-sos... I was up there many years ago and we were told
something different.

A Naval guy came out, all covered in gold braid. He asked to speak to
everybody and we were told that:

1) if we broke through the first fence, we would be arrested by unarmed
civilian MoD police - supported by armed service personnel, who would take
their place if we approached the inner fence or threatened the police.

2) if we then went on to break through the inner fence, we would be
arrested by armed service personnel, who would warn us and then shoot us
if we didn't follow their instructions and/or appeared to be threatening
them or others and/or approached the "nuclear fence".

3) if we broke through the "nuclear fence", which has "Deadly Force"..
signs every few yards - we would be shot. No warnings. Take a step inside
that fence and you would be shot.

He was very nice and friendly about it all. Appreciated why we were there
and "understood that we would want to break in from time to time". But
just wanted there to be no misunderstanding about what, "Was on, or not
on". But he was very clear - step through *that* fence and you will be
shot without warning. He even brought a plan of the base showing which
fence he meant.

The MOD police (MOD PLOD) are routinely armed at all sensitive locations. I
come across them fairly regularly. Even at lesser military establishments
and even front line air bases the guards are armed MOD PLOD. Service
personnel tend to only take up armed guard duty during exercises.
