They do not need logs, they just carry out hash value checks, in real
time, then make a few calls ... emails, I guess, really.

"We aren't resting as far as trying to identify victims," Smollet
said. "What it does is bring to light the global nature of this. The
arrest of the woman down in Texas led police back to Surrey, England,
which is where we originally got the series of 450 images. So you see
it involves a full circle.
"We live on a fairly big planet but it's a very small world when it
comes to the predators that would commit these horrific offences on
our kids."

S/W trawls the data of the images, in the source, peer PC. It compares
the data to the hash database, in the S/W, in real time, to ID the
'CP', displaying the IP connecting the source PC.

What is "S/W"? Software?

Your reply also has no relevance (that I can see) to the NOTW article
nor the methodology / data that was used to arrive at their map - which
wasn't compiled by them anyway. The map is based upon data extrapolated
from 97,000 individual file sharing applications on the Gnutella network
located on computers in the UK in the period April 2005 to August 2007
(mainly data from after November 2005). The amount of IP numbers
involved would be far, far higher than that number.

I'm just trying to follow your logic, not pick holes in what you posted.
You are mentioning a date - and a series of incidents - in December
2003. I don't see the relevance to this thread. Perhaps you are going
off at a tangent?

You make the mistake of accepting that the sources stated by the LEAs
are where they actually originated.

But, let us say they did ... you are conflating Flint's work with my

There is no tangent, it is all the same system of international LEAs,

What do you mean by that?

Not every computer using P2P will always have the same IP number for every file it downloads. IP numbers can change over time. An installation of Limewire, like many other pieces of software, generates its own serial number / key. That serial number remains constant while that software is installed but the IP number associated with its use can change. When a file is requested for download that key is transmitted as part of the string request that is sent out.

The 97,000 figure I used refers to serial numbers, not IP numbers. The number of IP numbers will never be less, and by default the number will be higher.



BTW, Flint is doing this for more funding, see his teaming-up with
'Wasserman'
