Yes - and that's why they are sensible to leave now. I have friends
in Zimbabwe who are caught by that situation. Their standard of
living has dropped considerably, but they have managed to maintain a
reasonable standard by various means, and have fantastic houses by UK
standards and of course the wether has not deteriorated. There is
however nothing that they could take with them, and would have to
start from absolute scratch in a different country.

They are kicking themselves for not getting out when they were in a
position to take at least a propoportion of their assets with them.

Well yes, my white SA friends tend to be vineyard owners or at least
their families are and folks of a similar status. My black ones tend to
be hard workers but certainly not wealthy, the bottom line is though
that if they fled neither would be able to take very much. At the moment
they can get their liquid assets out by various means but no-one with
any sense is going to invest in SA at the moment so the sale value of
businesses is depressed.

I note with interest that despite that SA won the rugby world cup last
year. By their own admission they won't be doing so again for many, many
years as equality considerations mean that they now have to field a
second rate side. It's a shame that they can't see the parallels with
the economy and development generally.

Still I look forward to the resurgence of "boys football teams" and the
re-emergence of the Sowato necklace now that Winnie is getting her hands
back on the reins of power. I'm actually quite surprised that the Zulus
are sitting back and letting it happen, they'll be next once the whites
have been put against the wall.
