But the difference is that the manufacturer always *does* include a
Windoze driver.

But they're almost never "certified for windows", and often create conflicts with other drivers, sometimes to the point of creating system instability, until the manf patches and issues an upgrade.

I've seen similar issues with linux drivers during my frequent but
short attempts to get a satisfactory Linux system working. And
although I indeed did encounter such issues with earlier versions of
Windoze, I do not recall having any installation issues with any of my
hardware in the past 3 years or so (Except when trying out Vista,
which I do not and will not use).

Let's face it - you possibly had to be dragged, kicking and screaming, into using XP and maybe Win2k before that - but eventually realised that it was both inevitable and not that bad after all.

I have Vista running here on a couple of machines as I am getting support calls on machines using it. It installed with no problems and basically works fine. OK, so getting it to join an NT domain needed a registry hack, but that isn't something most people will be wanting to do. OK, setting up an Intel Netport print server was "interesting" but, hey, they are obsolete, after all...etc

It actually reminded me more of trying to set up a Linux system than a Windows one..a lot of the things that I would have expected to work automatically, needed instructions from the web on how to do it..

Meanwhile, my Centos machine is running very nicely...
