If I am to try Linux - please can you advise which version and

I'd suggest Ubuntu -www.ubuntu.com
There's a live CD which you can download & burn to a disc, boot
from, and you'll be running (albeit slowly) without actually
installing anything to your hard drive. It'll give you a good
indication, but not _perfect_ - I found a few drivers which
installed automatically after a proper installation which didn't
work on the live CD.
Thanks

MP-BIOS bug 8254 timer not connected.........
I just cannot be arsed.
I cannot remember a version of Windows (even all those disks with
3.11) which did not at least boot up.
depends on what you mean by "arsed". 3 seconds of googling :

Was this the "answer" : Re: [4294672.157000] ..MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer
not connected to IO-APIC
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have no idea why it's happening, but I had the exact same error, and
here's how I fixed it:
At the grub boot screen, use your arrow keys to highlight "kernel
/boot/linuz-2.6.15-25-386 root=/dev/sda3 ro quiet splash" (your exact
paths and numbers might be a little dfferent). Then type 'e' to edit
the boot options; you will be taken to another screen. Append 'noapic'
to the end of the boot options, and hit enter. Then just type 'b' to
boot. Dapper should then boot normally.
Yeah - right
ffs - what is a "grub boot screen"
.
If this "problem" was known about in 2005 - who are we waiting for to
fix it?
Has someone put in a bug report?
Who to?
Is that how Linux works?
I repeat - I cannot be arsed. And this epitomises why 99% of people
will stay with Windows.
Well said. Linux has several uses, they can be very reliable in what they
do
best, whether thats powering tivo, a webserver, or some asdl router, but
as
an all round operating system, well, it just dont cut the mustard.
If MS can still release a piece of software that is as awful as Vista,
yet
maintain 90% of the market place, you can see just how far away the
competition is.
That says nothing about the technical superiority of linux over any
version of windows. Windows is way back in the dust. What you really mean
when you imply that linux is "crap" is that there is a shortage of
applications software and some hardware drivers that you particularly
require.
I have heard recent improvements have meant that Linux leaves windows 98se
in the dust. But, it is just not as good as XP, get over it. Xp, with its
bloatware, with its poor security, with its poor seperation of admin and
user, with its weakness to viruses and spyware, it still miles ahead of the
rest.
If you take your 'i hate ms' hat off, and compare linux to OS X, are you
really saying that Linux is up to the same standard??
