A family member has a new Toshiba computer with Vista (they couldn't
supply it with XP unfortunately) and it keeps freezing up so that it
has to be rebooted forcibly. Unless anyone knows of a solution to
this, is the remedy to purchase XP and then to demand that the
retailer reimburse you the cost? I tend to the view that perhaps
that is the only sensible option, and certainly less time consuming
than trying to troubleshoot the machine (which is fitted with
nothing but the usual widely available software).

Simple, get Linux. It's far better, and it is free.

Try a Live CD.

And, its a little bit shit as well. It serves its use, but it is no
substitute for a proper operating system. Get yourself a copy of windows xp
it edition from some download site, dont feel guilty, as you have a license
for vista which you are not using. You have gave MS their pieces of
silver....

Unlike Linux, your isp will support XP, your digital camera software will
work with it, your scanner will work, you can play dvds on it, 99.9999% of
all pc based software and hardware on the highstreet will work with it, the
vast majority of, you wont even need to read the instruction booklet to
install.

If it is a modern Toshiba laptop there is a strong possibility that XP
will not run on it fully functional. Best try a Linux live CD and see if
it will give full functionality to the Toshiba. Ubuntu and PC linux are
pretty good at that and at least a check is available unlike XP. Either of
them will handle most of the hardware available today with no problems but
again a check before buying is advisable. Playing DVDs requres a separate
download due to US copyright laws but once done they will play exactly as
in Windows or a MAc. I have never heard of an ISP conection that would
not work with a linux OS. Be surprising if that were the case since most
of the internet servers are linux anyway

The advantage of the linux solution, providing it runs anyway, is that it
can be installed dual boot with Vista so you don't lose any microsoft
fuctionality anyway

I would strongly advise against downloading anything operating system or
utilities from a P2P site. You have no idea what could be embedded in the
software.

as the other poster advised, geta live cd and test it on your Tosh
.
