Common Law

Hey there,
I work in a hospital and have a question about common law.
So, today in the A&E department there was a patient in who was
unwell. The patient was seen by a Psychiatrist, who deemed him not to
be mentally unwell in anyway, and that his symptoms were alcohol
related. The patient started being verbally and physically aggressive
towards staff and security were called. The sister in charge of the
A&E wanted to patient to be kept under common law. One of the
security staff told her that was no such thing as common law and that
the patient couldn't be held unless they were detained under the
Mental Health Act.
I'm just asking what common law the sister of the department was
referring to here? The security guard asked her to explain what
common law she was talking about and she couldn't answer him. I am
confused myself as I don't know what she meant either. I'd be
grateful if someone could shed some light on to this one.
Thanks
Cassius.
