Because it is a fact of our culture that there are some things that
are acceptable for women to do but unacceptable for men to do and vice
versa. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the subject of personal
appearance/fashion. It is ridiculous to insist that "equality" should
include such things.
I have no problem whatsoever for a school or workplace insisting that
its students/employees conform to the current cultural traditions of
the society (or a subsection thereof) in which they live.
Personally, I would have no problem if my GP was a woman who wore
black stockings, eye shadow and lipstick. If my GP was a *man* who
wore black stockings, eye shadow and lipstick OTOH, it would make me a
tad uncomfortable, which is not conducive to a satisfactory
doctor/patient relationship. In general, I prefer not to be treated
by a doctor who is overtly abnormal - there is a risk that his lack of
conventionality will include his ideas of diagnoses and treatment.
However, if the doctor in question has very short hair, a French accent and a Légion Étrangère tattoo and is fast approaching your extensive skin grazes with a bottle of surgical spirit.... run.
