This morning, I clicked on a link on a posting which turned out to be
fake, a sound effect of "oh oh" has now appeared on my PC when trying
to perform certain functions like when I was on a financial website on
my account and clicked a link.
Anyone else had this and do you know the solution please.
I would suggest that you start with an online virus/spyware/trojan/etc
scan and then progress from there. eg
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Or, of course, restore yesterday's system state using your full and
incremental backups...
I wonder whether there's a way to get Windows XP to create a restore
point every day automatically? It seems to do so rather arbitrarily.

Yes it is, for what it's worth. Copy the following text:
rp = "Manual Restore Point by " & WScript.ScriptName
GetObject("winmgmts:\\.\root\default:Systemrestore").CreateRestorePoint rp,
0, 100
into a text file in Notepad and save it as Restore.vbs.
Then go into Control Panel, Scheduled Tasks, Add Task & point to this
script, set up to run daily.
.
