Many years ago when I was TPFT insured I had my 5-series 'written off'
after I was tailend tapped, breaking both rear lights and denting the
panel under the boot lid and the bumper. I bought it back from them
for a couple of hundred and ran it for another year without doing a
thing to it!

You drove a car with no back lights for a year?

No, both back lights had broken the plastic forming that comprised
their bodies to such a degree that new light lenses didn't fit
correctly. So all I did was to keep the broken lenses and simply tape
them with clear sellotape to hold them together and I even used some
nail varnish to cover up a small amount of white light that leaked
through!

Going back more years than I care to count I had a Ford Thames 15cwt
(the precursor to the Transit) which had a Ford Escort rear light
cluster where I'd broken the original and couldn't find a second-hand
replacement. I just bodged it into place and the MOT man passed it
because it worked, even if it didn't look pretty!

My Mazda MX5 was written off after some fairly minor damage where both
airbags popped. Cost of new airbags and seatbelt retensioners was over 3000
Pounds. Add in some minor bodywork damage, even though the chassis was
untouched, it was cheaper to write it off. In the end, I did not make a
claim (if you are a dab hand with Google you can probably find out why) and
sold the damaged car for 3000 Pounds. The purchaser, I know, had bought
working air bags and so on out of a car that had been rear-end shunted.
There was no problem in repairing my car back to 'as new' condition. It was
just a question of economics.- Hide quoted text -

That I have no problem with. Unfortuneatly not everyone is as honest
as yourself.
