My opinion is that
if she's really worth 24,000, then she should be able to walk into a
24,000 job in the private sector.
This is not really fair as there are many jobs where the only, or
main, employers are local authorities. For example, if X was earning
24,000 as an infant teacher, she is unlikely to get a similar job at a
similar salary in the private sector and the same goes for a rating
and valuation officer or an environmental health officer or a social
worker or a traffic warden or parking attendant.
Many local government jobs need quite intensive and specialisred
training and qualifications which are, perhaps, of little use outside
the local government sphere.
I appreciate that. However, when asked if she'd though of getting
another job, this lady replied "but not all the vacancies have been re-
graded yet, so I might end up going to an even lower grade."
And wtf is a "wages technician" ? She said she was responsible for
calcualting the wages of "as many as 100 people" (her words). The last
company where I worked that actually had a *payroll* department
(rather than it being apportioned into the legal/finance departments)
did quite well with 2 people for a company of 1,500.
It was clear that in her mind, the "real world" was simply the cosy
world of local government.
Sadly, IMO, the few people who do the real work are vastly outnumbered
by loads of useless petty bureaucrats ....
