I have bought a car which was written off by an insurance co but was
bought
back, repaired and put back on the road.

Unlucky.
Any idea what category of write off?

Cat C
Damaged but repairable, insurer decided not to repair.
The car is (was) only worth about a grand so it is hardly likely to be
extensive damage, i'd have thunk.

Dont get too carried away on the phrase 'written off', which conjures
up nasty images of rolled motors, two cars welded together, etc. For a
car of this marginal worth, the level of damage required to write it
could easily have been extremely trivial. Imagine the insurance
company calculations: car value pre-accident £1,000; %age we are
willing to repair* =50%. Total cost available to put right = £500.
Labour rate at garage = £80ph. Ergo only six hours available to
repair, including £20 of sundries. Needs parts as well? Damn, now only
three hours work before write off...

Many years ago when I was TPFT insured I had my 5-series 'written off'
after I was tailend tapped, breaking both rear lights and denting the
panel under the boot lid and the bumper. I bought it back from them
for a couple of hundred and ran it for another year without doing a
thing to it!

*the %age varies with different insurers so I'm guessing there
.
