You couild try for a bit less what the legal bill would be for them making
you sign it, plus all of your legel costs to get advice on weather you
should sign it etc.
IANAL
A pragmatic approach might be to respond with a polite letter saying
something like:
"I have been led to believe that I may have certain rights under section 40
of the Patents Act in respect of this invention. Given that it would cuase
us both a significant amount of time, effort and expense to obtain a legal
determination of the value of these rights I wonder if you would care to
suggest a figure that might be acceptable to us both and thereby avoid
dissipating time and money in legal processes."
Put the ball back in their court, and if they respond with a number then
they will have accepted the principle that they owe you money. After that
you can arrange a meeting and haggle over the price. If they refuse you will
have lost nothing and can still proceed down the legal path if you wish.
