Sainsburys* (not noted for ripping off their customers) have a similar
problem in that the amount that gets debited to customers' debit and
credit cards isn't always the amount entered on the card terminal.
Sometimes the debit aquires a '0', sometimes a digit gets duplicated
and sometimes (most frequently) the debit is made twice. Although the
error isn't always consistent, it is clear that the transaction isn't
as incapable of error as the banks claim.
Sainsburys had to open a whole department to deal with what was
obviously not really their problem.
Curiously, Sainsburys are aware that an equal number of transaction
loose digits or just don't get processed at all. For some reason, the
staff of the department receive few, if any, complaints on this score.
I do my card reconciliations two working days after the transaction. I
may not handle as many transactions as Sainsbury's, but I have yet to
have a single error in any of them. I suspect that Sainsbury's may be
blaming the system, rather than staff training.
OTOH, Sainsburys enact tens of millions of transactions per day as
against your meagre handful per month. Statistically they are vastly
more likely to have errors than you are.
The fact that you have not had a problem is not convincing evidence that
the system is free from error.
Neither is the fact that they have had to set up a department to deal with
errors any sort of evidence that the problem lies with the system, rather
than with the people operating it.
Neither is it evidence that it is *not* problems with the system. The
system is prone to error as the numerous people who have atempted to get
credits to their accounts when they are debited £200 when they make a £20
cash withdrawal have shown (the banks won't entertain a claim unless you
have the receipt from the machine). On the other hand, there are many
people who have successfully revovered via the hombudsman (or even sued
their bank) because the debited amount was above the daily cash withdrawal
limit. This is actually one of the most frequent complaints the hombudsman
gets.
