On very rare occasions they do, if they suspect there is a problem, but this
would be for cash transactions, not card transactions. Card transactions
are low risk because they appear on a bank statement.

Whether the company can be bothered is another matter.
I am certain that the company could easily trace that particular
transaction on their systems if they wanted to.

This is a shop selling *fabric*. It's unlikely that any fabric will cost as much as 115.99 a metre - so it would need to be multiple metres to end up >100GBP. And with most fabic being sold for x.99GBP a metre...I very much doubt that they will have had many sales for that exact amount, ending in 99.

Depending on the shop, it may have very few sales >100GBP in a single purchase.

I must admit that my first thought was to wonder whether this was a small family shop, staffed by members of the family..

It could be deliberate fraud. It is very easy to enter an amount with an extra "1" and many will not notice that, at the time. Those that do can be laughed off with an "oops" and an immediate correction. Of those that don't, many will not keep the receipt. Those without a receipt may just write it off as being their fault. Nice little earner.
