I hope that you really don't think that all research ends up on the shelves of a university library. In many areas, hardly any of it does so. If you look at the publishing history of many academics, you will find that the only papers they have published for decades have been joint papers with others in their department, where really they have had little involvment in the work. They haven't been sitting on their hands for those decades - it's just that their own papers are not published for a wider audience.
