I had a great holiday in Florida early this year, now 7 months later
the
hotel I stayed in have charged me hundreds of pounds...
Thinking it was fraud, I called the credit card company, they say as I
gave them the details of my card, I am to phone them first as it maybe
some error, if not, get back to the credit card company.
I called the hotel, and they say they have still not been paid by the
tour
operator and after trying to get payment, they had no option 7 months
later to charge my card, the manager also states they have charged
everyone's cards as they have not received payment for anyone.
Hotels usually argue that on check-in, the customer gave credit card
details and agreed to the hotel charging any unpaid costs to the card
after departure. This is quite routine for hotels.
Its a tricky one. If the credit card company will do the charge back
then the problem is resolved. If not, it would be easier to deal
with/sue the tour operator in this country than to try to get money back
from the Florida hotel.
How common is it for hotels to require presentation of a credit card
when the holiday is booked through a tour operator?
I've booked into several hotels (in Europe) and only been required to
hand over a paper 'voucher'.
Could a hotel really refuse to accommodate you if you refused to hand
over a card (or you didn't have one with you)?
I suppose you have to have a card???. In the US even though you have a
package holiday, they still charge a state room tax, and a few other
little bits...
My CC have agreed that the hotel may of taken payment without
authorization, they confirmed I did not use a pin, but confirmed with a
signature (obviously not).
The tour operator state they have paid.
The hotel management say they are out of pocket for thousands as the very
large operator have not paid, and they have charged everyone's credit card
who stayed at that time last week as they said "What else can we do?".
Really the hotel should have chased the tour operator instead of taking the
easy way out and charge the customers. If the CC can do a charge back, then
it will cost the hotel more.
