As with Thompson and Venables, I do wonder whether a criminal trial is appropriate for these kids,
yes it is appropriate.
who were behaving appallingly but could hardly have foreseen that they would kill their victim.
what do you think *was* foreseeable about their behavior?
How about taking them from their families and sending them to some sort of residential school where they will learn to behave in a civilised way and to make something of their lives?
like a borstal?
what makes you think they should be priviledged to a special education as some kind of reward?
maybe such a 'school' would develop simply into a 'school for young thugs' to learn more about crime?
more hand-wringing is probably not what this country needs at the moment in terms of tackling crime.
I await sentencing with interest.
story from local paper a few weeks back where a group of about 40 youths were drinking in the local park and one decided it would be funny to lob a bottle at a passing taxi - hitting its windscreen... Bad enough you might think, but when the driver stopped and got out to remonstrate he only just managed to get back in and drive away as they all descended on him - almost certainly to do the old 'dance on his head' routine...
We have *all* behaved like idiots when young, but I'd wager not many of us put others lives so clearly in danger with our antics, or for that matter, being so immune to fear of grown-ups that taking an adult on team handed was ever seen as an option.
