As with Thompson and Venables, I do wonder whether a criminal trial is
appropriate for these kids, who were behaving appallingly but could hardly
have foreseen that they would kill their victim. How about taking them
from their families and sending them to some sort of residential school
where they will learn to behave in a civilised way and to make something
of their lives?

"Five boys have been found guilty of killing a father of two as he played
cricket with his teenage son on an outdoor tennis court. Ernest Norton,
67, suffered a heart attack in Erith, south-east London, when he was
pelted with stones and sticks by the group.
The boys, now aged between 12 and 14, were found guilty of manslaughter
and violent disorder. They will be sentenced on 19 October.
After the sentences were read out, the defendants, some of them in tears,
clung to their parents in the dock. "
At the age these so-called kids were at, they knew right from wrong (the
same as the Thompson and Venables case). They knew that thowing rocks,
stones and bits of wood would cause a great deal of harm and even death.
As with society today, these are the people who like to give abuse, but
can't handle it if anyone stands up to them.
