Not that it will help at all if (a) there is no active PC on the local

If, if, if... many millions of ordinary users do not have your or my
knowledge of computer security. I thought about wireless, decided I
didn't need it, and saved some money! I now have a 15m Cat5 cable
going to my piano PC downstairs, discretely routed. No problem
whatsoever. The cable cost £13.49 from Misco.
Which is fine if the cable is able to be routed without causing
problems. In many houses it is not possible. Wireless also gives you
the flexibility of being able to work on your laptop from anywhere in
the house, and to easily accomodate new or temporary Internet
equipment, such as when your friends or your kids' friends bring along
a laptop or a playstation or one of a plethora of other gadgets that
are WiFi LAN enabled.
