They're certainly not "invariably acting selflessly" - there is bound to be some variance in the reasoning. They are sometimes negligent in their use of force. Were they "acting selflessly in an attempt to defend the public" when a police officer shot and killed John Shorthouse Jnr. - who was lying in his bed at the time? Who were they protecting when they shot and killed James Ashley? How about Christopher Alder - who died on the floor of a police custody suite whilst police officers stood around laughing and making monkey noises?
