What is my position if I were to leave without completing my full
notice period, I will have done nearly 2 months so I'm basically
leaving a month early.
They can sue you for breach of contract.
But that would be limited to actual demonstrable losses they have
incurred due to your leaving early.
It is unlikely they will actually do so, but they could give you a
poor reference based on your not being "reliable" enough to complete
what you had agreed to. I don't think even that is likely, because
they would be too scared of libel charges.

Thanks for your responses everyone.
In reply to your points :
Unfortuantely my contract does say 3 months notice period and I've
used all my holidays, I think I've had too many.
I've been at my current position 14 months and its in the Insurance
industr where as my new role is in Fund Management.
I did send them a letter saying that I found the end of September
unacceptable and would like to suggest the end of August but they
wouldnt consider the earier date and said I was being troublesome.
