You may as well claim that there is no use for propoganda during a war
because years later the actual truth will be discovered. The point is,
the
false information served their purpose *at the time*.

What? For a day or two? Rubbish. It did not benefit them at all.

All that statement shows is that you know very little about
propaganda. After a major incident such as this, it is important to
get the bulk of the population to form an entrenched concept about
what happened as quickly as possible. Details are not necessary - in
this case just a basic view that it was a tragic, but *perfectly
understandable* mistake and the main blame falls on the dead guy
rather than the police.

If you can manage to get that impression into the minds of the public,
and if you can manage to reinforce it for just a few *hours*, then
people will tend to hold onto that view, and as the facts start to
change they will fit the new facts into their perception rather than
alter their perception.

Like persuading Americans that Iraq was "behind" 9/11 and Saddam's a
tyrant and he's worse than Hitler yada yada yada and the War on Terror
is like 1939...

I think many Americans STILL believe it today.

You're hummingbird's missing brother and I claim yet another £5.
