I would imagine an enormous number of videos on Youtube depict an act
that
is illegal *somewhere*. So not only would they need to be experts in
what
is or isn't legal, they would have to know the same things for every
country in which their videos are seen.

Whilst I accept that there are difficulties, there are some items,
however,
that are clearly unsuitable for public viewing - whether illegal or not.
Google should be demonstrating that they are a responsible organisation
rather than just saying, "It's not our job to monitor what is put on our
site." *They* created the site and therefore, IMO, they have a
responsibility for monitoring what goes on there.

Complete nonsense. They are the equivalent of the Royal Mail, they
just make the conduit available. The "contract" is between the
originator and the viewer.

So you claim. But there is a difference. The Royal Mail do not open up
packages and put the contents on display for all to see. They simply deliver
a package from a to b and, in general, have no knowledge of what they are
delivering beyond the fact that it is an envelope or package of
indeterminate content. If a poster sent kiddy porn to another paedophile,
and the Royal Mail opened it up and then printed the pictures and put them
on display in post offices - would that be acceptable?

What about Royal Mail and postcards? Look, there's one! It shows a
disgusting cartoon by Donald McGill. Oh dear, the kiddies have seen
it. "Mummy, why has that man got a stick in his swimming trunks?" Ya
see? Ya SEE? By the way, talking of sticks, heard George Formby's With
My Little Stick Of Blackpool Rock? I expect you'd find that
objectionable.

Also, I take issue with your completely
uniformed (because you won't have seen more than a tiny fraction of
online videos) comment about "clearly unsuitable". Lady Chatterley's
Lover was "clearly unsuitable" in the opinion of village do-gooders
until a court of law decided different and the do-gooders had to shut
the heck up and eat crow.

Do you think it *ever* likely that the real life depiction of cruelty
against children would be made acceptable? How far would you take your
liberal stance? Would you be prepared to see real life 'snuff' movies on
YouTube? How about a real life video of a man having his fingers and toes
cut off with a pair of secateurs?

You can probably find that or something pretty close, should you so
wish. I do not so wish, therefore I do not see such things, and I
can't anyway on dial-up, which is too slow even for a short video on
the BBC News website. But not seeing such events does not mean that
they do not happen! Many do-gooders appear to believe that if they
shut their eyes their view of reality is sanitised, BUT, they believe,
REALITY IS AS WELL! Anyway, tomorrow I finally get activated for ADSL
so I'll let you know what disgusting rubbish I manage to find!
(Probably some of the most disgusting was The Word on Channel 4 with
Terry Christian and Mandy The Cabinets. They had people eating live
maggots, bathing in horse piss, that kind of thing. This was YEARS
ago, of course!)


Since then the BBFC passes just about
anything, often with no cuts at all. You just have to realise that you
are an old fuddy-duddy who probably thinks loud music warrants
immediate arrest and that things have moved on a bit since the 1960s.
The videos I have seen so far, and I am only on dial-up so I don't get
to see many, are generally of poor (technical) quality, are only
slightly interesting and are usually a complete waste of time.

That's my impression also. The site is barely worth visiting for anyone of
discerning tastes!

And this is what should stir people - why taste and decency are in the
cellar. The videos over which every nanny is getting worked up into a
frenzy are just a symptom. I suggest looking at the disease, or even
deciding whether there is a disease or if these developments are just
the way things are going to go in the next 10, 20, 50, 200 years. What
will you (or people with your views) say when some other new-fangled
technology (e.g. holographs) comes along allowing even more filth to
be promulgated? Hint: You can't put the genie back in the bottle!
