As is well known, J M Barrie bequeaved the rights to Peter Pan to the
Great Ormond Street Hospital for children (GOSH). In 1953 Disney
released its aminated Peter Pan movie having purchased the necessary
rights from GOSH. However these rights did not preclude GOSH from
selling the rights for a movie to be made using real actors (as
distinct from amination).
Now as far as I can remember (from a newspaper article at the time),
GOSH was in negotiation to sell these rights in the 1960's when Disney
threatened it would sue anyone who dared make such a movie. I think
this caused a would-be buyer to lose interest in ther rights. GOSH
considered suing Disney, but the trustees considered that was too
risky with the result that GOSH missed out on royalties at the time.
I am interested in finding a reference to this, or at least an
approximate date so I can try and research a source. The matter is
too old to succumb to Googling.
Any help would be appreciated.
I'd heard about that.
At first I thought it was an urban legend, but tehn other things I've heard
about teh Disney corporation have led me to believe that there might be more
truth to it than I suspected.
As a result, I intensely dislike Disney and everything it produces.
Somehow, I doubt that my boycot will drive them into bankruptcy, but it
makes me feel better, lol.
