Job seekers allowance is £57.45 per week (for the over 25s). No
one
can survive
on that, they are faced with little option but to turn to crime.
So come on, why not? Show us what a single person's costs are
such
that £57.45 excluding housing costs won't enable them to
"survive".
Electricity, gas,

Max £10 a week in accomodation suitable for a single person.

clothing,

Dirt cheap these days, unless you're a sad fashion victim... Say £3 a
week (I probably spend less than that).

car + (tax and insurance),

Now that is expensive, but hardly necessary to "survive"

It is if you live in the country with no public transport. How are you supposed to get to a job?

TV licence,

About £2.50 a week, less if you don't live alone.

phone,

£4 a week max, landline and mobile, assuming sensible use, especially
if you have broadband and use VOIP...

internet connection,

£5 a week for broadband.

water rates.

Maybe £6 a week.

I spend more than that on food each week.

More than £57 a week on food?? You obviously eat out/get takeaways a
hell of a lot.

We spend about £400 per month between 4 of us, and that includes other
"supermarket" shopping such as toilet rolls, washing up liquid etc. So
£25 per person per week.

But shopping for one is always more expensive.

All adds up to less than £57, and includes several things which are
hardly necessary to "survive".

And also based on the assumption of living alone - having a place of
your own is not necessary to "survive". For someone living in shared
accomodation most of the above costs would be significantly lower.

Yes but you can hardly expect the single unemployed to sell the roof over their head. Buildings insurance and repair are another expense.
