Got a large American-style double fridge freezer (i.e. not cheap)
which has just packed up 6 weeks after the 24 month manufacturers
warranty expired. I've phoned the manufacturer (Samsung) who are
saying that I will need to pay for a service call.
Is it worth throwing the Sale of Goods Act at them?
Surely, you'd expect something like a fridge/freezer to last more than
2 years ?
If its any use to you, I just got Comet to pay for the parts on a fridge
freezer compressor failure (at 2 yrs, 3 months).
Parts cost £140, I had to pay £75 labour but I figured it was a
reasonable deal.
They wern't going to pay anything until I meantioned SOGA,

Interesting. How did you approach them?

Or was it just a matter of mentioning SOGA when they said it was
outside warranty? Did you call Comet Services ?

(My fridge was from COMET BTW not Currys - my mistake).

I rung their customer services who at first said "outside warranty,
gonna cost you"
I quoted sale of goods and they then said I'd have to book (and prepay!)
£30 to get an engineer round to see if it was a proper failure (rather
than me breaking it or wear and tear).
(As soon as SoGA mentioned by the way, you can hear the operator sigh
and change tone, they do work like magic spell!)

The engineer came and told me what I already new - compressor failed
estimate £140 parts, plus labour.

Phoned customer services and got routed through to some bloke who
countered my "pay for it all" with give us another £45 and we'll give
you the parts free ie total of £75 labour.

I figured this wasn't a bad deal as the f/f cost £250 new and if you say
that it should last 6 years, I've 'used' 2.5/6 * £250 of its value which
is about £75 or so.

They are much improved then - I have "taken" to court on three
occasions - however, they have coughed up at the last minute each
time.
