You're quite correct. My fault I didn't read the OP properly. A largeLiquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) is capable of doing as much damage as
ordinary
explosive. If you can arrange a largish propane cylinder to rupture and
ignite, you will have several hundred kilogrammes of liquid propane
completely turning to gas withing a few seconds and burning.
No you won't
Most likely there would be a jet of gas ignited which *could*
theoretically send the container off like a rocket.
I could easily arrange for an LPG cylinder to rupture into fragments. No
jets of gas, just a burning ball of LPG.
storage tank containing a couple of thousand litres of LPG is quite
capable of exploding. I was still talking about the stuff used in the
cars.
I've seen the movie of an LPG tank exploding. Shown it just before I
went to work on a set of LPG spheres replacing the level gauges while
product was still in them. An impressive explosion.
Small cylinders of the type used in these alleged car bombs do not as
a rule explode. They tend to leak and the leakage mixes with air then
that explodes. Still dangerous if one is in a fire but not as much as
some people are trying to make out.
The point I was making was that it would be relatively easy to arrange
suitable explosive charges to fragment the cylinder such that not only does
the gas expand rapidly and, at the same time, burn, but the fragments would
form shrapnel. I know just the stuff for the job as well, and if I couldn't
get it, how to manufacture it. However, Terrorism Act prevents me from
elaborating further.
propane bottle go bang?
