I was speeding up to maintain separation. I do not mind being behind a
lorry, even if I'm well below the speed limit, as long as I, and those
around me are safe.
What I object to is some spaghetti-eating* nitwit passing me at speed,
frequently crossing the lane divider, and quite probably side swiping
me. I could pull over to the left hand side but with the lanes as
narrow as they are in the roadwork situations, I choose to keep my
distance. I do not mind being in front or behind, but not beside. I can
simply accelerate to get a safe gap and then overtake the traffic in
front at a safe speed.
Another situation I avoid is, at the end of the A14, there is a large
round-about with an adverse camber. It is quite common for lorries to
overturn while turning right. Again, I simply keep my distance, driving
as slowly as neccessary.
I assume you would prefer me to become a statistic and then aportion
blame? I'd rather avoid the accident.
I still believe that increasing speed is sometimes the safest thing to
do in order to avoid an accident. Speed cameras have no discretion and
once you are snapped, you're done.
A revenue generating excercise that, with the exception of average
speed monitoring cameras, does little to reduce the mean speed of
traffic. An exercise that heavily penalises the generally law abiding
motorist for relatively minor infringements and does not target the
core bad drivers.
