A colleague of mine has bought a new Dell laptop, bottom of the range
model, but with Windows Vista. It runs pathetically slowly. I'm not
very familiar with Vista, and I'm tempted to advise her to demand a
refund or to format the hard disk and install XP.

Is there a setting in Vista, somewhere, to tell it to move into a
higher gear and behave exactly like XP?

Uninstall Vista and install XP - the Vista licence will cover it.

Or, more easily, put more memory in. 1GB minimum for Vista.

Oh, I don't know. I'm running Vista Ultimate quite happily on my
1.6Ghz Pentium M laptop with 768MB. Granted, I don't get the bells and
whistles that I get on my more souped up desktop machine, but it seems
to perform as well as XP so far. Being the cautious type though, I'm
not activating it until I've given it a more thorough testing :-)

Actually, I'm now wondering whether the slow speed of the laptop (which is
fitted with something like 512mb of RAM) is due to the bloatware
anti-virus packages that came preinstalled. But I still can't see any
advantage Vista has over XP, if your objective is to run your programs
fast and efficiently.

I think that you've hit the nail on the head.

Unlike previous version of Windows, XP is not broken (in any
way that most will notice). There seems no point to replace
it, if you don't need to.
