I suspect the slow speed is more related top the 512Mb of RAM - I'm
surprised Vista runs at all in such a small amount. XP may not be your
answer, because it's really rather small for a worthwhile XP installation
as well.

In my office we have numerous machines still running XP very well with 256
mb of RAM. Mainly Microsoft Word and Outlook and some proprietory accounts
software.

No doubt gaming would be quite a different matter. For gaming, you'd need
about 1gb last year, 2gb this year and probably 5gb next year. Except that
apparently anything over 3gb is likely to be no more than a placebo:
