We are in the process of selling our current property and purchasing

Virtually none - his clerk will do most of it!

They should delve sufficiently deeply to ensure that your purchase is
'safe'.

Have been
informed that he is still waiting for the "searches" to come back. What
are these searches?

They are searches carried out by local authorities on behalf of your
solicitor to make sure that there are no planning applications in the
pipeline which might affect your future property. (Such as it being
demolished to make way for a motorway!)

Behind the house there is an operational warehouse. Will the solicitor
look into the possibility of future development with the warehouse etc?

This should be included as part of the 'searches'.

It seems to me there has been more than one case where the purchaser has been completely unaware of their obligation to the church, but of course, you're right, it is up to the solicitor involved in the purchase to advise you. ...
