Interesting article about how easy it is to mess up your computer by
clicking "yes" when trying to access a porn site! Interesting, though,
that the company now seeks to impede those who offer help removing the
billing program from your computer. Effectively you are prevented from
using your computer unless you pay up - a novel way of enforcing a debt.
If that's legal, maybe other debts could be enforced in a similar way.
This clause in their T&Cs on the web site looks interesting.
"It wasn't me, do I still have to pay?
Yes. The membership was downloaded using your computer therefore you are
responsible for any goods and services ordered."
Haven't we seen similar arguments going on over the past few months with a
mythical pinball game that no-one has ever heard of?
Any legal comments?
Yes, plainly they are wrong.
I am sure many people would become ensnared without realising it. See also
this part of their FAQ:
"Some websites offer a free trial period where the services they offer are
free for a period of time. You must cancel before that free trial expires.
This is normally done from within the site. If you do not cancel you may
automatically become a member. We track all access to and from websites by
users as part of our quality control measures."
Their website is www.microbillsys.com but I can't find these "terms and
conditions" which people allegedly sign up to of their own free will by
clicking yes repeatedly. I'd like to know whether it is made clear that your
computer's performance will be progressively degraded until the computer is
of little use to you. I think people are entitled to know what to expect.
