Re: Dogs in Offices

An employee working as a clerk in an office block in the city decides to
bring his dog to work and to keep it in a corner of his office (he has his
own office) and to take it for a walk in the nearby streets at intervals.
Management have not yet expressed any opinion, but his colleagues are not
very happy about it, though they haven't come up with any specific reasons
for objecting.

Is it usual to ban pets from offices? Has anyone any experience of such a
situation?

Does the dog disturb you in any way? The only possible grounds for objection
that I can see would be if the dog interfered with your working environment
in some way - either by barking, poor toilet routine or because it triggered
an allergy. The issue of the time taken to walk the dog is between him and
his line managers - personally I'm always more concerned with the work
people do than the number of micro-seconds they might take away from their
desks during working hours. Have you asked *why* he has started bringing the
dog in? It might be a personal circumstances thing (perhaps his wife has
become ill and can't cope with the dog at home when he's at work) - it might
also only be a temporary thing for a specific reason.

But this is not a legal opinion - it's just my opinion as a normal, rational
and reasonable human being (it's a role I'm running in for a colleague).
