"Rip-off Britain" definitely does exist - but not in the telecoms, our telecoms are

That's like saying our violent crime is nothing like as serious as
violent crime in Iraq.

Compared in what way to the rest of Europe? You'd have to take into
account all the other factors, such as what competition is provided,
what is the level of service (in France broadband is considerably
further advanced than in the UK), what do people earn, what
all-inclusive packages are available.

Or even in banking - those whinging about
paying £4.50 to pay BT should try living in countries where you pay for every single
cheque you write, even bank transfer, and every cash withdrawal, and pay annual fees
just to have a bank account.

What a ridiculous comparison! You might as well say it's safe to walk
the streets at night in a small Canadian town. Well, gee whiz, I
didn't know that! Thanks for telling me!

Truth is in the Britain of BT where I (dunno 'bout you) am living, so
that is the only salient fact as far as I am concerned. You can tell
me until the cows come home that milk is FAR cheaper in a mountain
village in rural Peru, but d'you know what? I do not live in Peru!

"Rip-off Britain" applies to things like cars, hotels, restaurants, some electronic
goods, and most especially, houses!

It applies in Britain EVERYwhere where there is a company involved,
end of. Apart from the very smallest organisations such as high street
butchers, bakers, and similar honest tradespeople, all companies are
continually thinking up ways to scam consumers, i.e. you and me. You
are paying way over the odds for what ever you buy today, whether it's
the fuel in your car, your Tube/train fare, the sandwich you eat for
lunch (what's the scam/going rate down in London these days for a
cheese and pickle sarnie? £2.50? It won't be far off that, I expect,
even the crap kind sold through petrol stations and put together by
poorly-paid migrant workers. If you believe that Britain is generally
a fair place to live, then you're living in cloud cuckoo land and I'll
have heard my first cuckoo this year!
