IANAL

Not hard at all really - there are several programs out there that
will clone the entire drive, "blank" data areas and all.

As a compromise, I wonder if you ask them to return your equipment
with a working clone of your HD, and for them to keep the original for
examination at their leisure...

Thats a good idea Colin. I hadn't thought of that. They have 2 laptops
and a desktop. All the files were backed up before they were snatched

They weren't snatched they were taken quite legally, you were even
warned by the police that your computers may be seized if you continued
with your behaviour :-)

but the programs were not.

So install them again from the original discs or download them again
from wherever you bought them, you are talking about legal software
aren't you? Even if you had to use a pirated copy as long as you have a
legit licence to use then it is hardly rocket science.

I want to have argument ready for when we go to court on 11th June
and I think you have provided me with the answer to anything the cops
may claim thanks.
pete

They don't need to claim anything, just tell the beak what a nasty
individual you are and why they suspect your computers are better off in
their possession than yours.
